Idea for the Project
The idea for this project began with the idea that activism cannot occur or be successful without storytelling, and that storytelling itself is a form of activism. In order for someone to care about an issue to make a sign, march on the streets, call their representatives, write a song, post on social media, donate to a fundraiser, and the thousands of other valid forms of enacting change, they must identify with a story. Social science scholars would call this an element of framing, a way social movements negotiate and form a collective identity, a collective narrative memory, a common cause to fight against, and a collective route to a solution. Framing enables people from diverse, and sometimes opposing, backgrounds to unite and identify with a singular cause.
